Order

1. We have heard learned Amicus Curiae as well as learned Additional Solicitor General. We have also received inputs from some of the State Governments on the issue of overcrowding.

2. Orders reserved.

3. Learned Additional Solicitor General says that a large number of advisories have been issued to the State Governments. He says that he will advise the Central Government to write to the State Governments to indicate the steps taken pursuant to the advisories that have been issued from time to time with regard to overcrowding and under trials.

4. One of the other issues raised in the letter petition of former Chief Justice Lahoti is with regard to staff in prisons and their trainings.

5. Learned ASG will require the Central Government to find out from the State Governments the number of sanctioned posts and the number of vacancies in the prisons as on 30th September, 2016 and pass on the information to the learned Amicus Curaie.

6. List the matter on the issue of unnatural deaths in prisons on 18.10.2016.
